Greater Dayton Association of Black Journalist

With an eye on diversity, journalists from the Dayton Daily News, WHIO, WDTN and WKEF re-launched a chapter of the National Association of Black Journalist in 2003.

Students worked with journalists at the 2008 boot camp

GDABJ's 2010 High School Journalism Boot Camp A Success

The Greater Dayton Association of Black Journalists wishes to thank all the participants from this year's boot camp. We had a great time working with the students and we thank them for being so involved in the boot camp.

We also want to thank teachers, faculty advisors, and most of all PARENTS for informing our participants about the boot camp and making sure they were present. If they hadn't been there, we would not have had a boot camp!

If you didn't get to come to this year's boot camp, don't worry. We'll have another one in April 9, 2011, and it'll be even bigger and better! See our homepage for more information. Each year, our boot camp grows in the number of participants and volunteers who help to make the boot camp a great success. The GDABJ appreciates everyone who made the day possible - from our president, Amelia Robinson, to our youngest participant. All your efforts and interactions made the day worthwhile!

We end with these final thoughts:

  • Participate in any journalism programs or clubs your school offers.
  • Push yourself to be the best journalist you can!
  • If you are a high school junior, search NOW for internships for next summer.
  • Expose yourself to journalism on a daily basis (read a newspaper, watch the morning or evening news).
  • Job shadow a local journalist and form a mentoring relationship with him or her.

Special thanks to the "Dayton Daily News," the University of Dayton and participants and professional journalists from the "Dayton Weekly News," "Dayton Daily News," WHIO 7, WDTN 2, and NBC 22/Fox 45 who donated time, energy and materials.

"It was extremely informative and a great learning experience. Speaking with the professionals really gives you a feel for what it is like." - Workshop participant
